City Theatre proudly presents the regional premiere production of The Seafarer, by Conor McPherson, playing in the 252 seat Mainstage Theatre from January 22 – February 15, 2009. The Seafarer was last year’s smash hit on Broadway, nominated for four Tony awards including Best Play. The New York Times said The Seafarer was the “liveliest, funniest dialogue yet written by Mr. McPherson,” To read the full review, click here.

The Seafarer, takes place in the home of two aging bachelor brothers, one blind and on a bender, the other jobless and on the wagon. On Christmas Eve they hold an all night liquor-soaked game of poker with their menagerie of friends. The arrival of a mysterious stranger drives the action of the evening’s game to the highest stakes imaginable. Terry Teachout of the Wall Street Journal calls The Seafarer “The best new play of the year.” Richard will be played by Noble Shropshire (The Drowsy Chaperone on Broadway), Mark Ulrich (Mariela In The Desert at The Goodman Theatre) will play Lockhart, Sam Redford (Mother Teresa is Dead at City Theatre) will play Nicky, and Martin Giles (Honus & Me at City Theatre) will portray Ivan, and Christopher Donahue (Metamorphoses on Broadway) will play “Sharky”.

McPherson, whom the London Telegraph describes as “the finest dramatist of his generation,” was born in Dublin, Ireland. McPherson broke onto the international theatre scene with The Weir which won the Laurence Olivier Award for Best New Play for 1999 and went on to a successful run on Broadway. His next play to go to Broadway was Shining City which was nominated for two Tony’s including Best Play.

The design team for The Seafarer includes Narelle Sissons (Scenic), Andy Ostrowski (Lighting), Angela M. Vesco (Costumes), and Liz Atkinson (Sound).
