City Theatre is delighted to announce their production of Mary’s Wedding, by Stephen Massicotte, playing in the 254 seat Mainstage Theatre from March 12 – April 5, 2009. Mary’s Wedding has thrilled audiences across North America with its stirring portrayal of love tested during wartime. The Washington Times says that the love story between Charlie and Mary in Mary’s Wedding, “Puts you in mind of the grand passion of Catherine and Heathcliff in Wuthering Heights.”

Mary’s Wedding, a young bride-to-be dreams one last night of love and war. The young farm boy Charlie Edwards charms Mary with his sweet vulnerability as the couple hides from a summer thunderstorm. With the help of the open beauty of the prairies and the passion of late night horseback rides, Mary’s English reserve and Charlie’s shyness give way to full-fledged love. But the year is 1914 and the dark clouds of the Great War cast a growing shadow over the world, testing the strength of the young lovers’ bond. This romantic drama serves as a love letter to the power of memory, hope and innocent dreams. The San Francisco Chronicle calls Mary’s Wedding, “gripping and unabashedly sentimental”. Mary will be played by Robin Abramson (Outlying Islandsat City Theatre), and Braden Moran (Hamlet at Chicago Shakespeare) will play Charlie.

The San Jose Mercury News says, “Massicotte writes with an earnestness that is rare in this cynical day and age.” Mary’s Wedding was the winner of the 2000 Alberta Playwriting Competition, the 2002 Betty Mitchell Award for Best New Play and the 2003 Alberta Book Award for Drama. The play continues to be produced in English and French throughout Canada, the US and the UK. Massicotte has a BFA in Drama from the University of Calgary.

The design team for Mary’s Wedding includes Tony Ferreri (Scenic), Andrew David Ostrowski (Lighting), Susan Tsu (Costumes), and Andre Pluess (Composition and Sound Design).
