Tracy Brigden Directs Jeffrey Hatcher’s Faithful, Psychological Adaptation of Robert Louis Stevenson’s Classic Novella

PITTSBURGH, PA (September 29, 2009)—City Theatre opens its 35th anniversary season with Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, a loyal adaptation of the classic tale by Jeffrey Hatcher. Directed by Artistic Director Tracy Brigden, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde runs on City Theatre’s 252-seat Mainstage from October 17–November 8, 2009.
No stranger to Pittsburgh, Hatcher’s City Theatre credits include A Picasso, Murderers, and Compleat Female Stage Beauty. Coincidentally, Hatcher wrote the book for the musical Ella!, playing at Pittsburgh Public Theatre during the run of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde.
Based on Robert Louis Stevenson’s novella Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, Hatcher’s adaptation won praise from the San Francisco Chronicle as "a smart, tense and suspenseful new take on Stevenson's look at the evil that lurks in the hearts of men." A mysterious figure haunts the streets of London while respected Dr. Henry Jekyll displays increasingly erratic behavior. Jekyll's friends confront the monstrous Hyde, but only Hyde's beautiful mistress may hold the solution.
Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde features Kelly Boulware as Carew, Marty Giles as Utterson, Melinda Helfrich as Elizabeth, Dan Krell as Lanyon, Sheila McKenna as Poole, and David Whalen as Jekyll.
The design team includes Tony Ferrieri (Scenic), Susan Tsu (Costume), Christian DeAngelis (Lighting), and Joe Pino (Sound).
