February 24–March 20, 2005
Fiction
Tracy Brigden directs this witty and literate new play about honesty and deception between two authors and the woman they meet at a writer’s colony. Featuring Rebecca Harris, Andrew May, and Helena Ruoti.
City Theatre presents the Pittsburgh premiere of Fiction, by Seattle-based playwright Steven Dietz, from February 24 through March 20, 2005. Directed by Tracy Brigden on City Theatre’s 272-seat mainstage, Fiction features Rebecca Harris, Andrew May, and Helena Ruoti.
In Fiction, Linda and Michael meet in Paris, marry, and become successful authors. When Linda is told she has a brain tumor and only three weeks to live, she asks Michael to let her read the diaries he’s been keeping for years and requests that he read hers after she’s gone. As Linda immerses herself in Michael’s journals, she finds his memories of Abby, a young woman they both knew at an elite writer’s colony.
Dietz structures Fiction with the plot twists of a good suspense story and writes smart dialogue commenting on relationships, pop culture and the literary establishment. At the play’s heart, however, the concerns deepen as Dietz examines the risks of honesty and the rewards of truth in art and marriage.
City Theatre’s audience will be familiar with actresses Helena Ruoti and Rebecca Harris, especially from their appearance together in last season’s hit String of Pearls. Performing at City Theatre for the first time is Andrew May, who works as Associate Artistic Director at Great Lakes Theater Festival in Cleveland.
Dietz’s work is also well-known at City Theatre; his plays Inventing van Gogh, Dracula, and Painting It Red have all been produced here. City Theatre Artistic Director Tracy Brigden most recently directed the American premiere of Outlying Islands, the world premiere of Gompers, and an acclaimed production of Topdog/Underdog.
The design team for City Theatre’s production of Fiction includes Tony Ferrieri, scenic; Andrew David Ostrowski, lighting; Michael McAleer, costumes; and Elizabeth Atkinson, sound.
